Open-Ended Responses

For the most part so far, I have been very specific about how to respond to an idea or prompt. Many times an instructor will not be so specific and leave it up to you to choose what to talk about and then to make a conversation out of your own discussion.

I hope that you now understand that you can always use the LOCAL/GLOBAL approach to write about almost anything. To date, you all admit that two specific ideas have grabbed your attention: 1) critical thinking; 2) shock art/artistic activism. For this response, write two fully developed paragraphs on either of these ideas--or even one of your own choosing--making clear that you can respond in a thoughtful complete manner without specific directions. Remember that a complete paragraph covers the 4 steps and is about 5-8 sentences long.

The process of teaching to learn how to think critically is very great. To learn the process is challenging but it is also useful. I can write my papers for class more detailed and clear. Thinking better helps you expand your thoughts and great ideas so that your audience can understand. The process has helped me make better decisions in my life and makes me express myself better. It can help everyone in the world by teaching people to think clearer and look at life different. I was taught by my teacher how to turn one simple idea into 5 pages because you have to expand your idea into something major.

The process of teaching to learn how to think critically is for everyone in the world. The problem is that everyone can’t attend college. If we were to lower college tuitions and funs then everyone will be able to attend school in get the knowledge of thinking critically. There are a lot of smart and talented people in the world but they also have to learn how to think and use their mind clearer and critical. Thinking better can help out someone’s business or corporation because the owner can have a better % increase or a higher % use for a consumer. In a way the process is for everyone and I personally think that if everyone knew this then the world would be better.

Something that we talked about in class was shock art. Artist would take strange and different types of things and make them in to art a lot of people liked it and some didn’t because some things just seemed in humane and not right. One of the pieces of art was the one where the lady had sleep with a bunch of men and kept having abortions and saving the corps to take a picture of them and consider them art.
Me personally I think that the project that she decided to do was just crazy because of the fact that you are purposely killing innocent children not to mention healthy. There are so many people that are out here that can’t even have a child. I believe that she could have done that in a whole different way let alone creative. If she was a true artist she needs to find a more productive way to do it.

In class we talk about different topics daily. Something that really caught my attention was when the idea of shock art was brought about. I wasn’t really sure what it was at first, but once the story was told about an artist who used her period blood to display art, I was shocked (hints the name shock art). I never heard anyone doing something like that, letting alone calling that art. It’s just nasty in my opinion, but some would think that this is really special art, and one of a kind. It made me realize how different we as a nation really are. Things like that are important to some, but irrelevant to others. It made me think of what she must of be going through at that point to display something so blunt and mind twisting. I’m not one to say she was wrong for that, but that’s just not my way of displaying art. Every mind is different.

Shock art affects people as a whole. Many of the people are shocked because; shock art is so out of the ordinary. We are not use to seeing something so vulgar and blunt. It obvious that the art is made to surprise the viewer, but has a deeper meaning in it than we can see. I guess what art is to some is, not art to others. That’s what makes everyone so different.

I think that even though there is some art out there that may seem as though it does not have a purpose I think that all shock art is set out to get people thinking about the important topics, whether it is abortion, the homeless, orphan children or disease and sexual orientation. I think that shock art is a great thing to make people see a different view of things then there own bias views. To me personal shock art is always something that grabs my attention and gets me to pay attention to what’s going on around me. I think that shock art is so creative when it comes to getting a topic out there to the public and it is also really good at attracting attention whether it’s wanted attention or unwanted. The whole purpose is to get people to talk and think the more about things either close to home or not.
I think if more people were truly affected by the things that go on around the world there would be more of this shock art to keep impressing people. Until then there won’t be enough to make people look. If the issues that were such a big problem got more time either on the TV or magazines and news papers then it could get people to look and see that this not a tiny problem that can be ignored if you look away. That’s why shock art is so important it is just one of those things that get and catch people’s attention. No matter how much they want to look away they can’t because it grabs your attention and holds it there till you understand. That’s one reason shock art need to remain around.

I think that political art means a lot to people. It could be a reason on why they create the things they do. It’s a purpose for damn near anything you do in this world. For the most part the art that the artist do, they want it to stick on your brain, that’s why they call it shock art. I liked the piece on when the woman used her blood of her aborted baby. In a way it’s very discussing, but it goes back to having a meaning for your art.
By getting more people involved with shock art, it will take a lot of deep thinkers. People who can step out their comfort zones. Instead just explore a whole new way of thinking about art. It will never happen unless people stop ridiculing the art and making a big fuss for nothing. Society has to open their eyes to a new horizon and stop living these bored dull lives. Just take a canvas, or a notepad and just be creative as you possibly can.

During bridge we discuss many different things that take place in the world. One thing that we talk about is shock art. I was not aware of what shock art was, and I know that many of my other classmates had not known what shock art was either. Shock art is Art that shows disturbing imagery, sounds or smells to convey a story, feeling, or emotion. Shock art can be anything from Photos, Music, Lyrics, Paintings, and sculptures.
During my senior year of high school art was something that was taken seriously. The art teachers wanted their students to be creative and convey messages through their art. During the last week of school, the art department put on a art show. The show was amazing; all of the art students had amazing talents. There was one particular project that stuck out to everyone. The student had made his project 3D in it was an image of a little girl stabbing her ragdoll. The doll had internal organs and was bleeding. I remember him calling the project “Curse of Dolly.” His story behind the picture was a little girl had lost her doll and was upset that she ran away. His thought process behind his art was different it made me feel as though he connected deeply with the project. I believe that he was trying to portray the girl in the picture and the doll represented his girlfriend.
I feel as if shock art is a good way of expressing yourself and how you feel and getting the world to take notice.

During a post lecture in class, we learned about shock art. Shock art is different from the art we know. These artists use the most obnoxious materials to make their pieces. Our instructor told us about this one lady who constantly got pregnant and had abortions to collect blood from her fetus and display them in jars. Although this was very disturbing to me, that is her idea of art. It was also a man who made sculptures out of feces. He saved large amounts of poop and turned it into art work.

The title of this genre is very appropriate for this type of art, because this is very shocking. I guess the message that they are trying to get across is you can make something out of nothing. Because they are taking two horrible materials and turning it into a piece of art.

To think critically is to think outside the box with a bigger perception of life. The process of learning to think critically is taught with the idea to think with development. The process teaches you to leave out the meaningless and put in the important. The process shows how move past the five paragraph papers with intros and conclusions. The process teaches you about how different countries think and how different cultures think.
I am becoming a more productive thinker through the thinking critical process. These papers from bridge have me think in detail, to try not to think with vague ideas. This process taught me not throw in a bunch of random shit into papers and to focus on the main idea of the paper. This process teaches you about how you can relate to the topic of the paper and how the world can relate to the topic. Critically thinking is teaching me to become clearer with my writing and to make sure that every sentence follows the sentence before it.
The countries’ kids are not being taught to think to outside the box. High school kids are expected to completely get rid of their old writing skills and to learn. The process of thinking critically has to at least be brought up in high school. My proposal is for high school senior teachers to introduce the idea of thinking critically. The students right now are just taught about five paragraph papers and that’s it. There is none of that in college. Students will start off with struggle and confusion every their freshman year of college. This must be done to avoid students starting off on the wrong foot. Just have the teachers give easy topics to kids and have them think with clarity and development.

I can relate to critical thinking because it’s a process that is needed in everyday life. Such as getting facts for a research paper. It’s a way of getting to know the facts and why the facts are that way. Critical thinking is going to be a process I am going to be using quite often in school because it’s part of journalism. Critical thinking always ask the question why and that gives me a reason to elaborate on the subject at hand. It gives me more material so that I can complete a paper without stating information over and over. Critical thinking is a method that can always be used to reveal the source of anything.
People use critical thinking in everything they do especially to get what they want out of life. The persuasion that is used every day comes from critical thinking and how they develop a strategy requires critical thinking. For example a soda company trying to advertise a product needs to use critical thinking in order to make the consumer find the product appealing. By using critical thinking the result from that will be in in the soda company favor.
